Find An Internship . . .

Another one of our valuable networking tips is to look for an internship! When you think of an internship, you may think that they are only for traditional college students or people who have just graduated. Actually, internships can potentially benefit all people that are beginning a new career.

Networking Tips

Internships can be a valuable networking opportunity! An internship provides you with an opportunity to build relationships with people who are already in the field that you are joining. These people can be excellent resources for potential job opportunities and references.

An internship can also provide you with the experience you need to set yourself apart in today’s competitive job market. Many careers and employers require experience. You may find that without any experience it can be difficult to get your foot in the door. In addition to experience, there are also other advantages to accepting an internship.

One advantage can be preferential treatment when hiring for full-time positions. If you make the right impression during your internship, your employer may offer you a full-time position when it becomes available. If there is no full time position available, they may be able to give you a recommendation for another opportunity.

Before you rush out and look for an internship, it is also important that you consider the potential disadvantages of this type of position. Internships are typically unpaid or low-paying. Paid internships are rare and hard to find. You must consider whether you are financially able to work for free even if it may only be on a temporary basis. That being said, internships are also typically short-term positions. You must keep in mind that you will most likely still need to seek a full-time position when the internship is complete. Lastly, many organizations use interns to complete low-level tasks at little to no cost. You have to be prepared to ask for more responsibility and volunteer for more tasks if you want to make the most of this opportunity.

Bottom line . . . Internships can open the door for you! Start your internship search today!
